Independent Study Application
This class is for a self-directed student who is well trained in the basic techniques of building and has taken enough classes with us to be confident exploring a body of work on their own. An instructor will be present for advice or demonstrations offered upon demand. The main role of the instructor is to facilitate a community environment where students will learn from each other. Fill out the questionaire below if you think you are a candidate.
Parameters for Independent Study
Use of time
Come when the studio is open. Leave time for appropriate cleanup. Spend your time planning, strategizing, drawing, practicing, experimenting, making, refining and reflecting.
Use of resources
Be mindful of the material. Clay and glaze are expensive and labor intensive to make. Use them mindfully. Keep the scale of your work low risk and varied. Journal and consider options to use materials judiciously. We are sharing resources. Consider your impact on the Studio. Purchasing your own supplies is always an option if you foresee the need for a great deal of one item. Please make sure any purchases are approved by Amy or Emily before placing them on your work to go in the Kiln.
You will be charged 6 dollars a pound for your completed work. This covers the cost of the clay, glaze and firing.
Use your space
Read the room. Use the amount of space necessary for your making and no more. Work on boards so things can be moved easily. Ask your studio mates if you can be more accommodating by creating more space for them. Use exterior space when available. Be mindful of your footprint and the trail you leave behind. Stay tidy and avoid creating dry clay fragments that can become airborne. Mop and wipe down any place you’ve been. Use your free time between things to tidy up. Be generous with cleaning as a service to your greater community. Storage must be contained to your personal shelf.
